TITLE:                     Discussion and possible action regarding amending Chapter 16, Human Rights Act of the North Port Administrative Code

Recommended Action

Move for first reading amendment for Human Rights Ordinance (2015-47).

Background Information

During the regular scheduled meeting on November 22, 2016, there was consensus to allow Commissioner McDowell to work with City Attorney Moriarty and/or City Manager Lewis to amend the Human Rights Ordinance and thereafter present the draft to the Commission for discussion and possible action.

Attached is a draft.

The primary purpose for the draft is to add Veteran’s Status and Pregnancy as protected classes to the Human Rights Ordinance (2015-47) passed and adopted by the North Port City Commission the 27th day of October, 2015.  Veteran’s Status, Pregnancy as well as Citizenship, Familial Status, Genetic Information, and Handicap had been omitted from the original ordinance.

The intent or focus of the for the amendment is to prohibit all forms of discrimination.  Language not consistent with the intent has been omitted.  The ordinance’s attorney fee provisions was made consistent with Florida Statutes §57.105

Proposed additions to the ordinance appear in underline.  Deletions appear in strikethrough.
