Recommended Action

Recognize the 2020 Department of Public Works Road-E-O Skills Competition Winners for the Operations and Maintenance Division and Solid Waste Division.

Background Information

During the City of North Port Department of Public Works Road-E-O on February 22, 2020, the Operations and Maintenance Division and Solid Waste Division employees competed in skills competitions related to their daily job functions.

Operations and Maintenance Division

Participants were divided into two teams of five, who then competed in two separate skills challenges. The first was the Ball Challenge, which required the participants to show their skills operating a backhoe by removing softballs from the top of five separate traffic cones without displacing the cones from their location. The second challenge was the Pin Drop, which required the participants to operate a backhoe with a steel rod suspended from a chain, attached to the bucket, and place the rod into the top of three separate traffic cones without displacing the cones.

The participants were individually scored and timed, with scores calculated for the entire team. Team One, consisting of Don Kelsey, Jeff Carlson, Archie Ruiz, Brent Stevenson, and Tara Musselman, was the overall winner of the combined challenges, making them the Department of Public Works Operations and Maintenance Division 2020 Road-E-O Champions.

Solid Waste Division

Nine Solid Waste Equipment Operators participated in the Driving Skills competition. This competition promotes professionalism, creates a spirit of competition, and provides opportunities for the participants to refresh their driving skills.
