Recommended Action
Approve application of the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant in the amount of $6,231 for the purchase of an Ultralite Alternate Light Source (ALS) Complete Turbo Kit.
Background Information
The North Port Police Department seeks to acquire $6,231 through the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program FY 2015 Solicitation, which has been allocated through the Department of Justice.
If approved, $6,231 of grant funding will be used to purchase the UltraLite ALS Complete Turbo Kit. The estimated cost for this project purchase is $6,231.
The UltraLite ALS Complete Turbo Kit system is a vital tool for crime scene technicians and investigators. The UltraLite ALS is one of the most powerful handheld solid-state forensic lights in the industry has just gotten more powerful, doubling its output. The industry standard UltraLite ALS(r) is now the UltraLite ALS(r) Turbo. Through the use of light interaction techniques, UltraLite ALS(r) Turbo helps in the detection of trace evidence, body fluids, fingerprints, blood spatter, gunshot residues, and explosive accelerants. These substances may otherwise be difficult to detect against background materials so evidence can remain unseen. This UltraLite system can help detect and reveal subcutaneous bruising, injuries and wounds on bodies living and dead, and assist in the location of evidence containing DNA. Doubling the output power means greater levels of evidence visualization.
There is no grant match and no cost to the City of North Port.
