TITLE: Approve the Application to the Assistance to Firefighters Grant in the Amount of $1,272,727.27 for a Fire Rescue Mobile Command Unit and Authorize the City Manager or the Mayor, as Applicable Under the City Charter, to Execute all Funding Documents After Legal Review, Should the Grant be Awarded to the City.


Recommended Action

Approve the appplication to the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) in the amount of $1,272,727.27 for a Fire Rescue Mobile Command Unit and authorize the City Manager or the Mayor, as applicable under the City Charter, to execute all funding documents after legal review, should the grant be awarded to the City.

Background Information

The AFG program helps firefighters obtain critically needed resources necessary for protecting the public and emergency personnel from fire and related hazards.

During Hurricane Ian, the City activated a shared Emergency Operations Center (EOC), but the Fire Rescue Department Operations Center (DOC) was displaced from the EOC due to heavy structural damage and backup generator failure at the fire administration building. As a result, the fire rescue operation operated 24-hours per day out of a damaged apparatus bay.

As described in the Executive Summary provided by the All-Hazard Incident Management Team deployed to the City of North Port, operational challenges were directly attributable to a lack of a reliable and available command area.

The Fire Rescue Department has requested $1,272,727.27 to cover the purchase cost of the vehicle. If awarded, the City expects to receive $1,272,727.27. Matching funds in the amount of $127,272.73 are required and will be budgeted in fiscal year 2024.
