Background Information

City Commissioner Jacqueline Moore resigned as North Port Commissioner Seat 4, effective November 8, 2016. A special election has been called to fill the vacancy in Seat 4. Pursuant to Florida Statutes 100.151, the Sarasota County Supervisor of Elections confirmed the earliest dates her registration books were available for the special election are: March 14, 2016 for a special primary election, and May 9, 2017 for a special general election.

The authority to appointment is found in Article VIII, Section 2 (b) of the Florida Constitution and Florida Statutes Section 166.021 (1), and Sections 1.02 and 5.01 (c) of the City of North Port City Charter

The City Commission directed the creation of a resolution for an interim appointee at its regularly scheduled special recognition meeting December 1, 2016. the City Commission called for all those interested in serving as an interim city commissioner to submit their names for consideration to the City Clerk. The City Clerk was instructed to collect the names and to check that each is qualified to hold office, and to publically notice them so the public and the City Commission can have the opportunity to weigh all choices before the City Commission votes on them.

The City Commission instructed to leave the names of the appointee blank on the resolution. Pursuant to Robert Rules of Order (11th Edition) pages 162 -165 the city commission will fill-in the blanks of the resolution with one of the names submitted to the city clerk.
