Background Information

The Police Department is looking to purchase a training simulator to assist in providing scenario based training for our officers in a safe environment.  The total cost of the unit is $49,999 presently if ordered before the end of the fiscal year, at which time the price will increase by approximately $14,000.  The department has funding in the Forfeiture Fund in the amount of $28,000 that is available for the purchase of the training unit in accordance with Florida State Statute 932.7055(5).  The remaining $22,000 is available in their current year operating budget as a result of savings in fuel.  The program meets the requirements of the Forfeiture Fund which can only be budgeted with funds currently available.  By law, the City cannot budget for programs in this fund prior to having the funds available. The General Fund budget will not increase as a result of this purchase.

Financial Impact

The Law Enforcement Forfeiture Fund budget will increase by $28,000 with funding coming from current year confiscated property.  The remaining $22,000 funding will come from the General Fund savings in the current year budget for fuel in the Police Department and will not increase the budget.
