Recommended Action

Approve the First Amendment to Contract No. 2020-11 Professional Engineering and Architectural Services for the design of Fire Rescue Station 81 and temporary facilities with Schenkel Schultz Inc. increasing the agreement fees by $911,808 for a new total amount of $1,277,638.00.

Background Information

On October 13, 2020, Commission approved Contract 2020-11 with Schenkel Shultz Inc., for the expansion and remodel of Fire Station 81 for $365,830.00. The initial plan for this project was to add square footage to meet the needs of the department's growing administration as well as remodel and update an aging fire station.

In September of 2022, Hurricane Ian made landfall and significant damage was sustained to Fire Station 81. The repairs needed, as well as the previous expansion and remodel plans, exceeded the 50% rule requiring the fire station to be upgraded to current building codes and proper hardening as a Florida Building Code Essential Facility. The construction administration phase of the original contract was not fully expended due to the pausing of the project due to the hurricane. The remaining amount of $85,455.00 is accounted for within the proposed fee schedule in Exhibit B of this amendment.

This amendment updates the existing agreement with Schenkel Shultz Inc. to include professional services required to replace Fire Station 81 with an updated building compliant with current codes, as well as design of temporary facilities for Fire Rescue personnel during the construction phase.
