TITLE: Policy for Keys to the City
Recommended Action
Discussion and possible action to adopt a formal policy on criteria to distribute a Key to the City and update the Honorary Key to the City plaque hanging in front of Commission Chambers.
Background Information
Based on records available, in February 2002, during a commission workshop there was a discussion on giving honorary Keys to the City. Commission gave the following consensus, “Commission approval be obtained prior to Key presentation.” It was also suggested “a record be kept of the recipients for display in the Commission Chambers.” The first Key was given to Pat Love in September 2002. Since 2002, there have been 22 Keys given to honor the recipient for their service to the City and/or the community. Most recently, in 2017 and 2019, Commission gave consensus to distribute Keys to Buddy Hughes and Dick Lockhart, both former City Commissioners. While no formal policy is currently in place, a consensus was given in 2002 and precedent has been set to seek Commission approval first and present the Key at a Commission meeting or other formal gathering to honor the recipient.
Strategic Plan
Develop and promote City governance that fosters trust and utilizes departmental strengths and innovative philosophies to facilitate effective and efficient provision of City services.
