Background Information
On Wednesday, September 4, 2019, Wesley Carter, Solid Waste Supervisor’s son came home from school to find their home located in Myakka City on fire. The first floor of the second story home was destroyed and there was extensive smoke damage to the second floor. Thankfully, there were no family members at home however, their dogs were inside of the home. Fortunately, the Firemen were able to get the dogs safely out of the house. The Firemen placed oxygen masks on all the dogs. Wesley and his family are staying down the street with his Father-in-Law, so they have a place to stay until their home is rebuilt which will take several months.
Firemen from the Myakka City Fire Department, Manatee County Fire Department and Sarasota County Fire Department all worked very hard to fight the structure fire at the Carter home. In addition, once it was established that there were no family members in the home, they made it their priority to save the family’s dogs.
Recipients of the “Above and Beyond” Award demonstrate an attitude of excellence; teamwork and they aspire to go “Above and Beyond” the expectations of their job duties. I would like to present the Myakka City Fire Department, Manatee County Fire Department and Sarasota County Fire Department with the “Above and Beyond” Awards for their heroic efforts and perseverance to save the Carter Family residence and family dogs.
Shortly after the house fire, the Department of Public Works spearheaded a Donation of Clothing, Furniture and Miscellaneous Items Drive. There was an overwhelming amount of contributions to the Carter Family resulting from this effort. Therefore, the Department of Public Works would like to present the City of North Port employees; Sarasota County employees; Canine Unit and Solid Waste vendors with the “Above and Beyond” Award for making generous contributions to the Carter family.
