TITLE:                     Discussion and Possible Action Regarding the Community Economic Development Advisory Board Composition, Organization, and Term Limits

Recommended Action

Discussion and possible action regarding the Community Economic Development Advisory Board Composition, Organization, and Term Limits.

Background Information

At its regular meeting on March 15, 2022, the Community Economic Development Advisory Board discussed the composition and term lengths of Board members and approved the following recommendations:

Ø                     Recommend changing the terms for CEDAB members from two years to three years and the ability to renew for another three-year term.

Ø                     Recommend changing the CEDAB membership language to say, "no more than 11 members", changing (1) a. from Financial Services to FinTech, changing section (2) to add targeted industries such as Aviation and Aerospace, Corporate HQ, IT/Creative Industries, BioLife Sciences, Logistics & Distribution, and Mixed-Use, and to add another ex-officio member that is a monthly rotating City of North Port Commissioner.

The recommendations resulted from conversation on how to increase membership and improve efficiency of the Board, as well as engage leaders in targeted industries.

At the City Commission’s regular meeting on April 26, 2022, this item was discussed. As a result of that discussion, the City Commission directed the City Manager to send a memorandum to CEDAB thanking them for their recommendations, informing them of the Commission discussion on the topic, and noting that there will be future discussions.

City Commission has recently directed staff to work on changes to the composition of a few other Advisory Boards but has not provided direction on CEDAB.
