TITLE: Request that the City re-evaluate sites (lands) that were nominated in 2009 for the Sarasota County Neighborhood Parkland Acquisition Programs
Recommended Action
Discussion and possible direction regarding request from Environmental Advisory Board (EAB) for the City to re-evaluate sites (lands) that were nominated in 2009 for the Sarasota County Neighborhood Parkland Acquisition Programs.
Background Information
At the June 3, 2019 EAB meeting, a motion passed that recommendations be made to the City Manager and City Commission for the City to re-evaluate sites (lands) that were nominated in 2009 for the Sarasota County Neighborhood Parkland Acquisition Programs. Attached are some historical documents that may assist in the discussion. EAB staff liaison, David Jayroe, has been in contact with Brie Ondercin, Land Acquisition Coordinator for Sarasota County Parks, Recreation, and Natural Resources. Ms. Ondercin noted that the only property that the Neighborhood Parkland Program purchased was the Warm Mineral Springs site. Of the early nominations from 2007 through 2009 none were acquired. The City sent the County a priority list which the County’s Park Advisory and Recreation Council (PARC) reviewed and recommended moving forward with San Mateo, Chamberlain, and Kemsler nominations.
Thereafter in 2015, the City sent a letter to the County (letter attached) asking that they no longer consider the earlier nominations, including San Mateo, Chamberlain, and Kemsler. The letter also requested that the County focus on sites located along the Myakkahatchee Creek. Then in 2018, the City sent the County a letter (attached) requesting to rescind the nominations.
