TITLE: Approve the Acceptance of the Community Grant from the Walmart Foundation in the Amount of $3,500 to be Used for Shop with a Cop and Home for the Holidays Programs
Recommended Action
Approve the acceptance of the Community Grant from the Walmart Foundation in the amount of $3,500 to be used for Shop with a Cop and Home for the Holidays programs.
Background Information
Each year, the Police Department and Social Services Division coordinate holiday programs to assist underprivileged children and families. The Walmart Facility #3387 at 17000 Tamiami Trail has a grant program available to help with funding for these programs.
Shop with a Cop is run by the Police Department. The school board staff identifies children in their schools whose families are in need. The event allows children to interact with law enforcement and other willing community members to create a brighter holiday season for local families and strengthens the relationship between the community and law enforcement. This encounter will hopefully have a lasting positive effect on them throughout their lives.
Home for the Holidays is run by Social Services Division. The program connects income eligible individuals and families who need gift assistance during the holidays with organizations, businesses and citizens willing to adopt. When families and individuals aren’t adopted, the Walmart grant is used to guarantee assistance to those families in need.

$2,500 will go into account 001-0000-366.44-00 for Shop with a Cop and $1,000 will go into account 001-0000-366.90-00 for Home for the Holidays.
