TITLE: 2019 Wyland Foundation National Mayor’s Challenge
Recommended Action
Approve submission of statement of support for participation in the 2019 Wyland Foundation National Mayor’s Challenge through the Wyland Foundation’s website and encourage community participation in the challenge.
Background Information
Each year the City of North Port recognizes the importance of our natural resources and strives to support conservation and protection of our water, encouraging conservation through extensive community outreach programs in our schools and community. For the second year, the Utilities Department would like our community to join in the 2019 Wyland Foundation Mayor’s Challenge to continue to engage our residents to adopt positive conservation habits and bring national attention to the environmentally minded community that North Port has become. In 2018, North Port ranked 11th in our population category.
The challenge is presented by the Wyland Foundation with the support of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and National League of Cities and asks residents to pledge to adopt conservation behaviors to reduce the amount of water consumed by our community over the next year. Residents simply go to www.mywaterpledge.com <http://www.mywaterpledge.com>, take a four (4) step conservation pledge on behalf of the City and encourage friends to take part. The city with the highest percentage of residents participating in their population category wins.
Not only can North Port’s residents save money and help our community resources through conservation, participants can earn a chance to win water saving prizes - including $5,000 in paid utilities.
The Utilities Department is requesting approval to submit the City’s statement of support through the Wyland Foundation’s website (www.wylandfoundation.org/p/mayors <http://www.wylandfoundation.org/p/mayors> ) and support community participation in this challenge.
