TO: Honorable Mayor & Members of the North Port Commission
FROM: Peter D. Lear, CPA, CGMA, City Manager
TITLE: Canine Donation 24-month-old German Shepard
Recommended Action
Approve receiving a donation of a 24-month-old German Shepard named “Jett”.
Background Information
Last fiscal year, the City received a donation to fund a Canine Unit dog that was used to purchase a bomb dog. At that time, the North Port Police Department identified the need to expand the Canine (K9) Unit with one additional dog.
The owner of canine “Jett” wants to donate him to a Law Enforcement agency. Canine Jett has over $5,000.00 invested in him by his current owner in obedience and protection training. Canine Jett will be added to the department’s Special Enforcement Team (SET) and will assist in drug detection, working closely with the Narcotics Unit. Canine Jett will be trained as a single purpose canine for drug detection only.
Staff, canine trainer and department contracted Veterinarian have evaluated Canine Jett and found him to be well suited for the role of drug detection for the North Port Police Department.
An existing police vehicle was upfitted in anticipation of expansion of the City’s K9 Unit in Fiscal Year 2018-2019, so there are no further vehicle acquisition expenses anticipated for this canine.
Strategic Plan
Enhance services and expand availability of resources provided to residents.
Financial Impact
Vehicle upfitting totaling $7,337.00 from account 001-2100-521-46-03 was completed in fiscal year 2018/2019.
Estimated recurring costs for the care and maintenance of this canine are as follows:
$900.00 annually for the canine handler to receive specialty pay. (001-2100-521-15-00)
$1,000.00 annually for veterinarian visits. (001-2100-521-31-00)
$750.00 annually for dog food. (001-2100-521-52-00)
