Background Information

Sarasota County is a direct recipient of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)'s Community Development Block Grant-Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR). Sarasota County has named this grant initiative Resilient SRQ. The County will be awarded $201.5 million in funding to deliver unmet needs assistance to the community from the impacts from Hurricane Ian.

CDBG-DR funds activities related to disaster relief, long-term recovery, restoration of infrastructure and housing, economic revitalization and mitigation in the most impacted and distressed areas and generally fall into the following categories: housing, restoration of infrastructure, and economic revitalization.

The City of North Port’s Public Works Department is requesting funding for the design and construction of a replacement for the Myakkahatchee Creek bridge over Price Boulevard, Bridge No. 175014, a critical evacuation route for citizens living to the west of the creek which experienced high, turbulent water during and after Hurricane Ian.  The bridge will be widened, modernized to contemporary design standards and will feature a sidewalk instead of the pedestrian bridge now in place.  The modernization will make it exponentially less susceptible to future storm impacts.

This is a reimbursable grant, meaning the City will spend first and then request reimbursement from the granting agency. The grant application deadline was Monday, March 18, 2024.  Notification of award is expected in Fall 2024.

If awarded, contracts will be reviewed for form and correctness by the City Attorney.
