Recommended Action

Approve the Interlocal Agreement for Community Development Block Grant Program with Sarasota County for fiscal years 2023, 2024, and 2025.

Background Information

At the December 14, 2021 Regular Commission Meeting, Commission directed staff to pursue renewal of existing Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) interlocal agreement with Sarasota County. The City of North Port originally entered into an agreement in 1995 to allow Sarasota County to receive and administer the funds on behalf of the City.  Because of this agreement, North Port residents also benefit from the following programs:

HOME Investment Partnership Initiatives: Provides formula grants to fund affordable housing and direct rental assistance to low income households.

State Housing Initiatives Partnership Program (SHIP): Provides funding to local governments to create and preserve affordable housing.

Neighborhood Stabilization Program:  Provides emergency assistance to stabilize communities with high rates of abandoned and foreclosed homes.

Emergency Solutions Grant:  Provides funding for emergency shelters and prevent individuals/families from becoming homeless.

The City will continue to have a proactive role in the Countywide Staff Steering Committee to ensure funds are being used for projects that benefit North Port.

The City Attorney has reviewed the Interlocal Agreement for legal form and correctness.
