TITLE:                     Discussion and Possible Action Regarding Identified Items From the Sarasota County Joint Meeting Addressed by Letter of Support From Sarasota County.

Recommended Action

To direct staff to draft a Letter Requesting Support from Sarasota County Board of Commissioners for the four identified items.

Background Information

On May 18, 2023, the City Commission had a Joint Meeting with Sarasota County, which identified several items that need to go back to the Sarasota County formally in a letter in order to be considered. To accomplish that, the following items should be included in the request:

1.                     County and City staff shall review the current On Demand and fixed route transportation system in North Port and identify a short and long-term plan for addressing the needs of a rapidly growing population, particularly in areas of high-density growth and affordable housing growth (example:  Toledo and Price); and to evaluate the best way to address the transportation needs of the Wellen Park community, including On-Demand service, and to connect public transportation to the newly opened downtown area at Wellen Park.

2.                     Request that the County pick up the cost of providing lifeguards at the North Port Aquatic Center.

3.                     Re-establish a Task Force, so we can emphasize that the task force existed and is coming back together, to assess and address the growing need for Mosquito Management Services in North Port and provide residents with tools and education to address mosquito control on their own properties.

4.                     Letter of support from Sarasota County for the I-75 interchange to help show the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) of the entire region for the project. Attached is the last letter of support that was done in 2018 that Administrator Lewis sent and requesting for a new letter.
