TITLE:                                          Recommendation for Boundless Playground at the Garden of Five Senses

Recommended Action

City Commission approve the recommendation by the Parks & Recreation Advisory Board to place a Boundless Playground at the Garden of Five Senses park.

Background Information

In 2003, a conceptual Master Plan was created for the Garden of Five Senses by Urban Resource Group and Kimley Horn & Associates. The plan included three phases beginning with the development and construction of the garden which was completed in October of 2007.  The phase two concept included a playground on site followed by an outdoor amphitheater in phase three.

As part of the FY 2016-17 Capital Improvement Program, a project to add a Boundless Playground to the parks system was approved at an estimated cost of $220,000. The Boundless Playground concept incorporates universally accessible playground equipment making it as easy as possible for everyone to play, regardless of their abilities or disabilities.

At the August 18, 2016 Parks & Recreation Advisory Board meeting, there was consensus of the Board to recommend the Garden of Five Senses as the location for the development of a Boundless Playground. Over the past six months, staff and Advisory Board members having been researching options for the development of a Boundless Playground and are recommending the amenities and equipment in the attached conceptual design plan.

Parks & Recreation Advisory Board Chair, Maureen Coble, will be presenting the recommendation.
