Background Information

Per City Charter, the City Commission shall approve a redistricting plan by ordinance, if a substantial change is proven, no later than 10 months (300 days) following each decennial census published results. The 2020 Census data showed the current Commission Districts to be outside of the deviation in population based on average population among the districts.

The City hired the consulting firm ARCBridge Consulting & Training Inc. to draft redistricting maps and a redistricting website was made available to the public for over one (1) month for inspection and comment on the draft maps and descriptions of the recommended district boundaries. On March 8, 2022, the City Commission held a public hearing and received public comment on the proposed redistricting plans and selected Map C.

The requirements for redistricting have been met. Each district is formed of a compact, contiguous territory; is based on the principle of equal, effective representation as required by the United States Constitution; and is as equal in population as possible, with no more than a 5% deviation in population based on average population among the districts.

The adopted redistricting plan will take effect for any election held at least one (1) year following the plan's final approval.
