TITLE:                     Federal Fiscal Year (FFY) 2018 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program-Florida JAG Direct Application.

Recommended Action

Approve application and acceptance of the award of the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant in the amount of $6,978 for the purchase of Mini-First Aid Trauma Kits for Police Officers.

Background Information

The North Port Police Department seeks to acquire $6,978 through the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program FY 2018 Solicitation, which has been allocated through the Department of Justice.

The City of North Port Police Department embraces the recommendations outlined by the President’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing.  Of the six recommendations, the latter of which emphasizes the importance of officer safety and wellness.  Therefore, the North Port Police Department intends to provide additional life-saving protection to the officers through the purchase of Mini-First Aid Trauma Kits.  This will allow officers to have the kits readily available for immediate application for a multitude of emergencies, such as gunshot wounds, lacerations, amputation, or injuries to major arteries.

If approved, this grant funding will be used to purchase ninety (90) Mini-First Aid Trauma Kits.  The estimated cost for this purchase is $7,378.20, which will require $400.20 to be used from the Police Department General Fund Budget. Due to the timing of this grant, we will apply for this grant in FY18/19 and receive the approval and award of funding next fiscal year.
