City Commission Options
Option 1: Approve Resolution No. as presented, authorizing the purchase of real property located on Delmar Drive, North Port, Florida, 34291.
.
• Pros: Undeveloped, vegetated land absorbs stormwater better than built areas, reducing flood risk for nearby neighborhoods.
• Pros: Reinforces North Port’s image as a nature-focused community and aligns with regional conservation initiatives.
• Cons: Preserved lands still require management: invasive species control, trail upkeep, signage, habitat monitoring, safety checks, and staff oversight.
• Cons: If the land has been disturbed, the city may need to invest in cleanup, erosion repair, or ecological restoration
Option 2: Deny Resolution No. as presented.
• Pros: The city avoids costs and staffing needs related to land management, invasive species control, habitat restoration, or trail upkeep.
• Pros: If privately owned, the land continues generating tax revenue rather than becoming exempt under city ownership.
• Cons: Sensitive creekside ecosystems may be impacted by clearing, construction, or neglect.
• Cons: Developed land along the creek could worsen downstream flooding issues due to loss of permeable surfaces.
Background Information
In 2006 and 2007, the City Commission approved Resolutions 06-R-43, 07-R-11, and 07-R-52, authorizing the acquisition of specific real property within the Myakkahatchee Creek project area.
The Department of Public Works is now seeking approval to purchase a parcel located on Delmar Drive along the Myakkahatchee Creek (Parcel ID 0969061811), currently owned by Abdel Kiwan. Acquiring this property will secure permanent access for future inspection, construction, maintenance, and rehabilitation of the Myakkahatchee Creek. In addition, the purchase will support ongoing efforts to preserve and enhance the creek as a Class I potable water supply and valuable natural resource amenity. This action aligns with the objectives of the City’s Myakkahatchee Creek Corridor Project.
