Approve template for a Contract for Reimbursement of Firefighter or Paramedic Training Expenses (Current Employee - Tuition and Fees Paid by the City) and authorize the City Manager or Designee to sign future agreements using the approved template.

Background Information

North Port Fire Rescue maintains appropriate levels of paramedic staff through two methods. First, Fire Rescue looks to recruit and hire personnel that are already licensed paramedics. Second, the sponsorship of existing employees that are Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) to attend an approximately one-year paramedic training program that concludes with a national registry examination to obtain a paramedic license.

The contract template that Fire Rescue seeks approval for stipulates responsibilities of both the City and the sponsored employee to ensure the City is repaid related expenses to the sponsored training course if the employee does not complete the training or ends employment with North Port Fire Rescue within thirty-six (36) months of licensing.

Although the primary use of the attached template contract is for City sponsored paramedic training, there is also language for firefighter training included in the event North Port Fire Rescue hires a licensed paramedic(s) who will need to complete Firefighter I/II minimum standards training through an approved State of Florida provider.

This contract has been reviewed and approved by the City Attorney’s Office as to form and correctness.
