Option 2: Deny the utilization of the Sarasota County Landfill for the City of North Port's landfill waste disposal in Fiscal Year 2027.
• Pros: Staff have not identified any foreseeable benefits to denying the utilization of the Sarasota County Landfill.
• Cons: Staff identified no alternative facility offering an operational or financial advantage. Denial would likely require transporting waste to a more distant facility, increasing labor, fuel, equipment usage, transportation time, and overall operating costs.
Background Information
The City of North Port has utilized the Sarasota County Landfill for the disposal of municipal solid waste since ceasing its operations at its own landfill in 1984. Staff evaluated alternative disposal facilities by comparing tipping fees, facility availability, and transportation costs to determine the most cost effective option for the City.

The evaluation indicates that the Sarasota County Landfill provides the most favorable combination of tipping fees, availability, and transportation distance. Staff recommends that the City of North Port continue utilizing the Sarasota County Landfill during Fiscal Year 2027 and that the City Commission waive the competitive bid process pursuant to Section 2-407 of the City’s Procurement Code of the Code of the City of North Port, Florida.
