TITLE:                     Approve the State of Florida Department of Environmental Protection Standard Grant Agreement No. HA008 for Repairs to Fixed Weir 123 in the Amount of $471,000.

Recommended Action

Approve the Standard Grant Agreement No. HA008, between the State of Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the City of North Port, Florida, for erosion repairs to Fixed Weir No.123 in the amount of $471,000.

Background Information

The State of Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) will reimburse the City of North Port up to $471,000 from the FDEP Protecting Florida Together fund for making capital improvements to Fixed Weir No.123 as per the attached Agreement.

Hurricane Ian caused severe bank erosion around the eastern side of Fixed Weir No. 123, which is located on the McCaughey Waterway just south of Snover Waterway. The erosion has lowered the water level upstream of the weir, which is interconnected with Snover Waterway. A large segment of Snover Waterway and other interconnected waterways are experiencing lower-than-normal water levels.

Repair of the erosion allows the City's canal system to properly function as a stormwater conveyance system, source of potable water, and aquatic water body for wildlife habitat and recreation.  It also significantly lowers the risk of catastrophic flooding during and after major weather events, including especially tropical storms and hurricanes.

This project was completed by ZEP Construction this summer and charged to Capital Improvement Project No. IAN22.  The final invoice was just paid and the actual total cost of the project is $430,964.05.

The Agreement has been reviewed by the City Attorney and is legally correct as to form.
