Recommended Action

 

Continue Ordinance No. 2025-07 to second reading on March 11, 2025.

 

Background Information

 

On July 18, 2024, recent amendments to the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the City of North Port and the Florida Police Benevolent Association, were signed to provide for amendments to the Supplemental Benefit and to the Deferred Retirement Option Plan.

 

Ordinance No. 2025-07, amends the Code of the City of North Port, Florida, Sec. 2-260. - Benefit amounts and eligibility, and Sec. 2-283. - Deferred retirement option plan (DROP), so that the Code is consistent with the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. 

 

Section 2-260 is amended to reflect that effective October 1, 2024, members who elected to continue participation in the retirement system after the City joined the Florida Retirement System (FRS) will receive a $200 per-month benefit supplement. Those that elected to join FRS are not eligible for this supplemental benefit.

 

Section 2-283 is amended to extend the participation in the DROP from up to 60 months to up to 96 months.

 

Ordinance No. 2025-07 has been reviewed by the Interim City Attorney and is legally correct as to form.

Financial Impact

 

There is no financial impact for Fiscal Year 2025 as a result of Ordinance No. 2025-07.  However, there will be an estimated increase of $55,000 in future years.
